President Akufo-Addo has assured students and alumni of the University and Unity Halls of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) that he will consult with the University’s Council to find an amicable solution to recent events involving the two halls.
Addressing a seven-member joint delegation of the University Hall (Katanga) and Unity Hall (CONTI) at the Jubilee House when they paid a courtesy call on him to present their petition, President Akufo-Addo said he will, through the Minister for Education, initiate the process to engage the highest decision making body of the university to deal decisively with the impasse between the parties.
Authorities of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology at the beginning of the 2018/2019 academic year decided to convert the hitherto male-only halls into mixed halls, much to the displeasure of the alumni and current students of the two halls. All efforts on the part of the alumni to get the University authorities to reverse their decision have yielded no fruits.
Alumni Demonstration
Alumni of the University Hall, (Katanga), of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on Friday the 10th of August, 2018, staged a protest march over attempts by the University’s authorities to convert the all-male hall to a mixed one. The demonstration started from the Kwame Nkrumah circle and ended at the Education Ministry where they presented a petition to the Ministry of Education.
Court Action
On the 24th of August, 2018, the Kumasi High Court threw out an injunction application seeking to prevent authorities of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) from converting University Hall and Unity Hall to unisex halls. The Court explained that residence has already been granted to female students and seeking to prevent same would interrupt the activities of the school.
The petition had three main requests. The first is for the President to instruct the Ministers of Education and the Interior to put measures in place to ensure that students can pursue their academic goals without any fear of intimidation, harassment and physical abuse from University authorities as well as from state and campus security personnel. The second is a prayer for the Minister for Education to be instructed to present to the President and Cabinet, a comprehensive proposal addressing the acute residential and academic facilities shortage on campus and lastly, an order for the reversal of the recent actions by the University to convert University Hall, Unity Hall and Africa Hall to mixed-gender halls in preference for a more meaningful and sustainable solution of safe and secured residential accommodation for all students on campus.

In his address before presenting the petition to the President, leader of the joint delegation and the President of the Kantanga Alumni Association, Charles Dontoh, indicated that they decided not to petition the University Council because they were of the opinion that the actions of the Vice Chancellor were sanctioned by the University Counsel and that is why they decided to petition the President for his direct intervention on the matter.

Joint delegation was led by Charles Dontoh, the President of the Kantanga Alumni Association. The other members of the delegation were: Stephen Asante Bekoe, legal adviser and Counsel for the Katanga Alumni; Osei Agyemang-Badu, a Katanga Alumni; Patrick Baah Dadzie, Secretary of the CONTI Alumni Association; Anthony Avege, Organizing Secretary for the Katanga Alumni; Daniel Adjokatcher, Protocol Officer of the Unity Hall Alumni and Stallone Nyarko, Public Relations Officer of the Unity Hall Alumni.

Toutefois, dans certaines conditions, il est nécessaire de recourir à un soignant. C’est à ce stade qu’il convient d’être vigilant. Donner au malade et à sa famille une leçon de dogme de façon à ce que leurs cœurs ne soient pas attachés à un autre qu’Allah. 6. Leur faire savoir que la façon de soigner est différente de celle des sorciers et des charlatans et que le Coran recèle guérison et miséricorde, comme l’a informé Allah le Puissant et le Majestueux. 7. Diagnostiquer son cas : pour cela poser des questions au malade pour s’assurer de la présence de tous les symptômes (…) ». Or, dans les témoignages communiqués, l’interlocuteur qui se présente comme soignant ne pose aucune question aux personnes. Il débute ainsi la « roqya » directement par une récitation du Coran. En outre, il est intéressant de souligner que dans l’un des témoignages communiqués à l’UFCM, l’interlocuteur demandait à la personne de remplir successivement des verres de lait, d’huile, d’eau etc. et de les poser par la suite sur la table de la salle à manger. Au point que la personne s’est retrouvée avec une multitude de verres posés sur la table. Le comble est que la personne ignorait ce qu’elle devait en faire lorsqu’elle a pris conscience de la tromperie. Nous constatons par conséquent qu’une « roqya » ne peut être réalisée dans un environnement quelconque. En effet, une procédure de diagnostic est essentielle. Nous pouvons à titre d’exemple faire le parallèle avec un rendez-vous chez le médecin ; ce dernier ne peut vous prescrire une ordonnance sans au préalable vous avoir ausculté et interrogé sur les différents symptômes que vous ressentez physiquement. A défaut, au lieu de guérir vous allez aggraver vos maux. Cette attitude vigilante du médecin traitant doit se retrouver lorsque nous envisageons le recours à une « roqya ».
